Many use atheist thought to safeguard themselves from good and evil and God and satan.
It’s a comfortable place where if you intellectualize theism away, you think you won’t be held to judgement. The problem is, when you are not on God’s team, you’re on the other team. And satan has no mercy for people.
“He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters.”

I was an atheist for a short period of time and God woke me up to the truth with an encounter. He’s very alive, very real, and very loving. He seeks our repentance and His love is our salvation. Love’s name is Jesus Christ.
“He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”
I John 4:8 NKJV
So if you or someone you love are ”on the fence” about belief in Jesus or God and think you can do life without Him, just remember, satan owns the world and the fence you or your loved one sits upon. But God is only a prayer away. 
“Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.”
James 4:4 NKJV
